How this calculation works

Enter measurements above to see the worked calculation.

Coverage is a product input

The 350-square-foot coverage setting is a starting example per coat, not a promise of coverage. Texture, porosity, color changes and application affect the amount. Enter the product’s coverage, coats and allowance separately. Primer is a separate calculation.

Whole gallons versus exact gallons

The tool shows the calculated amount and rounds up to whole one-gallon cans. If your supplier offers quarts or larger containers, compare available sizes before buying. If walls and ceilings use different products, calculate them separately.

Product reference: Sherwin-Williams paint calculator guidance. Confirm the current label for your chosen product.

What this room estimate includes

Wall area is 2 × (length + width) × height, minus the combined door and window area. Selecting the ceiling adds length × width. Trim, doors, cabinets and additional rooms are not included. The same coverage and coat count apply to all included surfaces.

Make the estimate your own

Measure the actual area, choose your product and update the allowance. Costs use the price you enter. Delivery, tax, labor and preparation are excluded unless this tool has a separate field for them. The result rounds whole packages up; displayed decimal quantities are not supplier order increments.

Before you order

  • Check dimensions and units, including depth and openings.
  • Confirm the selected product’s coverage, yield or density.
  • Ask your supplier about package sizes, minimum orders and delivery access.
  • Keep a copy of your measurements with your material plan.
