Our calculation methodology
MaterialScope uses explicit geometric formulas and editable product assumptions. This page describes version 1.0 of our calculation system, updated September 29, 2026.
Calculate before rounding
Dimensions are converted to consistent units first. Rectangle area is length × width. Rectangular volume adds depth. Cylinder volume is π × radius² × height. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. We retain calculation precision internally, then show most decimals to two places.
Add extra material once
Adjusted quantity = net quantity × (1 + allowance ÷ 100). The example allowance is editable and is not a product specification. Package counts round up after applying the allowance. Decimal yardage is not rounded to a supplier’s delivery increment.
Use product-specific assumptions
Bag yields, shingle coverage, flooring box coverage and paint coverage should come from the product you choose. Density is needed for gravel and soil weight. Our prefilled values illustrate the tools; they are not measurements of your local material.
Keep pricing transparent
Costs use the price entered by the visitor. No live supplier price feed is connected. Most tools exclude tax, delivery and labor. The concrete cost tool separately applies the entered material tax and ready-mix delivery fee, while labeling the bag alternative separately.
