How deep should mulch be?
Choose an appropriate total depth before converting your garden bed into bags or bulk yards.
Count the mulch already there
If a bed already has 2 inches of mulch and the desired total is 3 inches, calculate a 1-inch addition rather than another 3-inch layer. Check several locations because the remaining depth may be uneven.
| 100 ft² bed | Net volume | 2-ft³ bags |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch additional depth | 8.33 ft³ | 5 |
| 2 inches additional depth | 16.67 ft³ | 9 |
| 3 inches additional depth | 25 ft³ | 13 |
Measure planted areas realistically
Exclude paving and other areas you will not cover. Divide irregular beds into simple sections and sum their areas. Keep mulch away from trunks and avoid burying the plant base merely to make the surface level.
Bulk yards or bags
Both describe volume. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide the total cubic feet by the printed bag volume and round up, or ask a bulk supplier about delivery increments and minimums. Choose bag or bulk pricing in the calculator. Bag estimates use whole bags; bulk estimates use allowance-adjusted cubic yards before supplier delivery increments.
Example: a 200-square-foot bed at 3 inches
200 × (3 ÷ 12) = 50 cubic feet, or 1.85 cubic yards. With 2-ft³ bags that is 25 bags; with 3-ft³ bags, 16.67 rounds up to 17. Check the volume printed on the bag, since bag sizes vary. To compare with a bulk quote, multiply the bag count by the bag price and set it against the per-yard price plus delivery.
Refreshing an existing bed
Measure the depth that remains before buying. In the same 200-ft² bed, topping up from 2 inches to 3 inches needs only 1 inch of new mulch: about 16.67 ft³, or 9 two-cubic-foot bags. Enter the additional depth, not the total, in the mulch calculator.
