Bagged concrete vs. ready-mix: which should you buy?
Compare total cost, bag handling and delivery access before choosing concrete for a small patio or pad.
Research-based buying guide · Sources checked October 23, 2026. MaterialScope has not performed hands-on testing of these products. Prices in worked examples are invented assumptions, not store prices or supplier quotes.
Start with the same volume
Here, bagged concrete means a dry, complete concrete mix that you mix on site. Ready-mix means freshly mixed concrete delivered for placement. Compare each against the same dimensions and allowance, rather than comparing a bag price with a truck price.
For an illustrative 10 × 10 ft patio at 4 inches thick, net volume is 10 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) = 33.333 ft³. With a 10% planning allowance, that becomes 36.667 ft³, or 1.358 yd³. Divide the unrounded volume by the bag’s yield, then round the bag count up once. This is a quantity example, not a specification for slab thickness or reinforcement.
| Example at 4 inches thick | Volume with 10% extra | 80-lb bags at 0.60 ft³ | Dry mix to handle |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 4 ft pad | 0.217 yd³ | 10 | 800 lb |
| 10 × 10 ft patio | 1.358 yd³ | 62 | 4,960 lb |
| 12 × 12 ft patio | 1.956 yd³ | 88 | 7,040 lb |
The 0.60 ft³ yield is published for the 80-lb QUIKRETE Concrete Mix No. 1101 bag; other products may differ. Check the product data sheet. Dry weights above are bag count × 80 lb; they exclude added water and packaging and are not a vehicle payload recommendation.
Compare the complete bill
Suppose those 62 bags cost $7 each: the material subtotal is $434. If mixer rental and transport add $110, the bag route totals $544 before tax and labor. For a purely illustrative ready-mix quote, suppose the supplier bills 1.5 yd³ at $180/yd³ plus $200 in combined delivery and small-load fees: $470 before tax, placement equipment and labor.
In this scenario, ready-mix starts $74 lower. An extra $150 placement-equipment charge would reverse that result. The point is to compare written totals, including the supplier’s billable quantity, rather than assume that a larger order is always cheaper. Neither example includes forms, base preparation, reinforcement, finishing or curing supplies.
| Bagged route | Delivered route |
|---|---|
| Whole bags × actual bag price | Billable yards × quoted rate |
| Pickup or store delivery | Delivery and short-load fees |
| Mixer rental and transport | Pump, buggy or other placement equipment |
| Mixing, carrying and cleanup time | Crew readiness, discharge time and possible waiting charges |
Access and the crew can decide the purchase
NRMCA’s ordering guidance emphasizes coordinating delivery, crew readiness and truck access. Tell the supplier where the concrete must end up, not just where a truck can park. A street delivery and a backyard placement are different plans. Read NRMCA CIP 31: Ordering Ready Mixed Concrete.
For the 62-bag example, even a hypothetical two-bag batch means 31 batches. That is a handling calculation, not a claim that your mixer holds two bags or that the pour can be completed in time. Ask the installer to confirm mixer working capacity, batch cycle, carrying distance and placement sequence before buying.
Questions to ask before ordering
- What mix does this project require, including exposure and placement requirements?
- What quantity will be billed, and what delivery, minimum-load and waiting fees apply?
- Can the truck reach the placement point, and who provides any extra equipment?
- Who will mix or receive, place and finish the concrete, and is the schedule realistic?
- What is the plan for unused material and cleanup?
Is bagged concrete lower quality?
Packaging alone does not establish suitability or finished quality. Compare the selected mix with the project requirements and follow its mixing and curing instructions. This guide does not rank the strength of an installed slab from the delivery method.
Make your own comparison
Use the slab calculator for volume and the concrete cost calculator for entered material prices. Add rental, handling and placement costs separately. If bags are practical, compare QUIKRETE Concrete Mix and Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix before choosing a product.
