Gravel / Project guide

How much gravel for a driveway?

Estimate each layer, then convert loose volume to a supplier’s delivery units.

For a 40 × 12-foot driveway at 4 inches deep: 5.93 yd³ net, or 6.52 yd³ with a 10% loose-volume allowance.

Measure each layer separately

Length × width gives the footprint. Multiply by depth in feet for cubic feet and divide by 27 for cubic yards. A base layer and a surface layer may have different depths and materials. Keep their estimates separate for ordering.

Distinguish finished depth from loose delivery

A finished compacted layer may require more loose material. Ask the supplier or installer for the appropriate loose-volume factor. The example 10% is simply a calculator starting point; it is not a universal compaction specification.

Convert to tons with an actual density

With the example loose density of 100 lb/ft³, 176 cubic feet weighs 17,600 pounds, or 8.8 U.S. short tons. Material type and moisture may change the result substantially. Confirm whether the supplier sells by weight or volume.

Confirm practical ordering details

Discuss delivery access, truck size, unloading space and the number of loads. Quantity alone does not specify drainage, geotextile, layer design or suitability for vehicles. Record each layer’s intended finished depth with the estimate.

Common driveway sizes at 4 inches

The table uses the same method: a 10% loose-volume allowance and an example density of 100 lb/ft³. Replace both with your supplier’s figures.

Example: a base layer and a surface layer

For the 40 × 12-foot driveway, a 4-inch base layer is 160 cubic feet and a 2-inch surface layer is 80 cubic feet. With 10% each, order about 6.52 yd³ of base material and 3.26 yd³ of surface material. Run the driveway gravel calculator once per layer, because the two materials may have different densities and prices.

Read tons vs. cubic yards before comparing quotes.
